North Vernon grew up where two rail lines crossed, and that history still shows in the older part of town — the tight grid of streets near the center, some of them named for the railroads that made the place, holds a good stock of frame and brick houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of these have the steeper pitches, cut-up rooflines and add-on porches typical of homes from that era, and it is usually the low-slope porch and addition roofs, not the main gable, where trouble starts.

If you own one of these homes, have someone check where the low-slope section meets the main wall and inspect the valleys after every big summer storm. A patch on that junction is far cheaper than the interior damage a season of ignored seepage causes.
